the best cure for a viral infection? prevention.

vaccination is the #1 cure for viral infections, preventing them from ever happening in the first place.
For viruses that aren't vaccinted against, the second best treatment is nothing, as standard medicines do very little against them. You need to enter into the class of meds known as anti-virals for that, which is a whole different ballpark than antibiotics.

Viruses are tough to fight pharmacologically because you can't attack them structurally or metabolically like you can with bacteria. You almost always have to attack them genetically (with a few exceptions) inhibiting DNA or RNA synthesis or replication, or protein synthesis. You can't, nor should you be allowed to, get anti-virals over the counter, since the potential for toxicity is huge with anti-virals.

So for most viral infections (like if you have a cold) treat the symptoms until it goes away on its own however you like best. for more severe, permanent viral infections, herpes, HIV, etc. A regular strong course of prescription anti-virals is the only treatment which can help.

As far as 'alternative' medicines working, I highly doubt they do anything other than help with symptoms, which is great, but they won't cure a virus.
